Japanese firm to lay off workers

THE Palace said yesterday the announcement of Japanese firm Fujitsu Ltd. that it is retrenching some 2,000 Filipino workers is “something beyond us” but assured laid-off workers of government assistance.
Press Secretary Cerge Remonde said the retrenchment at Fujitsu is something that the administration cannot avoid because Fujitsu’s main market is in the United States whose Wall Street crash started the global economic meltdown.

In an interview over DZXL this morning (Thursday, March 19), the Press Secretary revealed, “Meron mga hinandang programa ang ating Pangulo.”

“At nakikita naman ngayon, napaka-aktibo ng ating Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) sa pagpo-proseso ng mga na-dislocate na mga workers dahil meron tayong Comprehensive Livelihood and Employment Program na siyang sasalo sa mga manggagawa nating mga kapatid na nawalan ng trabaho,” he added.

Remonde also recalled the President’s earlier directive for government agencies to go into a savings mode so as to be able to provide emergency employment for unemployed Filipinos.
