By ARCHBISHOP OSCAR V. CRUZ
A GOOD number of media outlets recently published the following quotes which are said to have come from someone of certain standing in a religious community: “Jews made up the Holocaust, Protestants get their orders from the devil and the Vatican has sold its soul to liberalism…There was not one Jew killed in the gas chamber.
It was all lies, lies, lies.” In the event that the said thinking and consequent posture were factual, then the following could be said: Anyone in his or her right mind even but with a little knowledge of world history, would not even think, much less dare make the above quoted public pronouncement. But what makes the same statement not only very regrettable but also much censurable is the attribution thereof not simply a “cleric” but specifically a “bishop”.
To add salt to injury, the international media previously released the news that the subject party concerned has been previously granted the lifting of his long standing official excommunication from the Catholic Church, through the kindness of Pope Benedict XVI. And such a brutal and atrocious utterance was attributed to no less than the direct beneficiary of the benevolent grant.
The given name of the thus favored individual is a certain “Bishop” Richard Williamson who is said to be affiliated with the hierarchy of the known schismatic “Archbishop” Marcel Lefebvre who founded the apparently ultra-rightist “Society of St. Pius X”.
The above sad episode brings to mind the truth in the saying that grace is only operative on a sound human personality constitution–unless there be a direct and miraculous Divine intervention! In other words, notwithstanding all philosophical studies, theological courses plus all other scholastic and technical pursuits, and irrespective of all personal promotions and official titles, someone categorically egoistic and arrogant, stands immune to all spiritual grants to his or her status and stature. And egoism plus arrogance eventually equal self-ruin–which in effect, and pitifully so, apparently happened to the personality.
The “bishop” was said to haven’t been evicted from his host Country and seemingly further dismissed from his foreign task. And when confronted by media people to know more about his “professional” misfortune, he appeared to have demonstrated not a humble bearing nor humiliated standing. Instead, he appeared somehow pugilistic–thereby probably keeping his egoism and arrogance.
The “bishop” could be now a very angry man at practically all who denounce his anti-Jewish stand, his anti-Protestant disposition plus his anti-Vatican posture.
This brings to mind the maxim that the higher people are, the lower and harder they fall. This is a good reminder to those in tenure of high authority and great influence yet precisely use such official and personal attributions to sow social maladies, to cause human sufferings–instead of promoting human welfare, public good and social peace.
