THE sixth installment of Eoin Colfer’s Artemis Fowl series will yet again pull the reader into a world most intriguing. I had trouble putting the “Time Paradox” down. Like the previous Artemis Fowl Books, it has a way of pulling you into a world where nearly everything can be done with a little (or maybe a lot of) magic.
Artemis Fowl is a child prodigy and is known to have the highest IQ in Europe . The story picks up three years after he was otherwise occupied in a time tunnel. Since then, a lot of things have changed, including the anti-hero himself. Initially introduced in the first book of the series as an extremely smart, cold, calculating and cynical individual, this time, Artemis displays his more compassionate and remorseful side.
Instead of busying himself with plotting the perfect crimes as in earlier installments, he actually races to undo one this time. Due to a most unfortunate circumstance, one that is beyond magic, he is forced to travel back in time to undo a terrible wrong, which sets in motion a showdown between him and his smartest opponent yet: his younger, more devious self.
This book basically toys with the thought of how things wouldn’t have happened if he hadn’t done anything. And it’s basically what kept me turning page after page.
It’s a tale of fairies flitting about in high-tech James Bond gadgetry. The action is nonstop and the delicate topic of interracial romance was handled well by Colfer.
Add that all up, toss in an elf, an explosively flatulent dwarf, a deranged and narcissistic pixie, a demon warlock, a little morality play and a lot of plot twists and you have a most interesting take on the life of an evil genius. It may be a bit hard to follow at first if you haven’t read the previous books but you will definitely want to pick up the earlier installments. This book is a must-read and it will definitely leave you wanting more.
