Police asked to provide protection to media members

PRESS Secretary Cerge Remonde today called on Gen. Cecile Ishra Sandala of the Philippine National Police (PNP) Recom 10 to always ensure the safety and protection of media practitioners.

Remonde, who flew to Cagayan de Oro last Saturday for the 58th induction ceremonies of the press club there, said in a radio interview over DZRB that Malacanang, especially the Office of the Press Secretary, wants that adequate measures are in place to ensure the safety and protection of mediamen “who are our partners at OPS.”

He said ensuring the protection of media people was agreed during the dialogue called by President Gloria Arroyo with the heads of the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas (KBP), Philippine Press Institute (PPI), National Union of Journalist of the Philippines (NUJP), the National Press Club (NPC) and the Publishers Association of the Philippines Inc. (PAPI).

Remonde added the President’s instruction was for the police to provide protection to all media practitioners, when and wherever necessary.

On May 9, Remonde will visit Naga City to address the KBP and discuss their concerns related to the safety of members of the media community.
